Ferguson Township will welcome the community to an Arbor Day celebration with family-friendly activities and an opportunity for the public to help shape the future of a local park.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at Autumnwood Park, 2207 Autumnwood Drive. It will have a theme of “10 Years and Growing as a Tree City USA Community,” celebrating a decade of dedication to trees and sustainable practices.

“A designated Tree City USA community, Ferguson Township is committed to environmental stewardship through the planting, care and management of its street and park trees, alongside its abundant green spaces,” the township wrote in a news release.

Activities will include a tree planting ceremony, bucket truck rides, an informational tree walk, tree seedling giveaway, arts and crafts and light refreshments.

The township also will host a Community Playground Design Day in partnership with the Pennsylvania Municipal League and KABOOM!, a nonprofit organization that helps communities build playspaces that address inequities and specific needs. the Township is planning a new inclusive play space at Autumnwood Park and invites community members, especially children, to share their ideas.

A Kid Design Workshop will be held from noon to 1 p.m., with children invited to share their ideas as “play space experts,” helping shape  features and equipment for the new playground.

An Adult Workshop and Community Planning Session will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for adults to help guide planning and identify leadership roles for an upcoming community build. Focus areas include:

  • Site features and construction logistics
  • Volunteer recruitment and outreach
  • Event and meal planning
  • Build Week coordination and logistics
  • Selection of playground equipment based on community input

Register to attend the Design Day workshop here. Community members can also share their ideas through an online vision survey.

The community build day will be held in August, when volunteers will come together to construct the new playground, transforming ideas from Design Day into a new play space for local children.
